BIOGRAPHY - Mary Schmal holds a Master of Science Degree in Education with an emphasis on teaching creative writing and is the creator and author of Rainbow Class and Pot of Gold writing courses. She has taught writing and composition for over thirty years in elementary, middle, junior high, senior high school and college. As her teaching schedule permits, she is an invited speaker at writing conferences. Her teaching and speaking invitations have extended from New York to California, and many states in between.

In 2007, Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, recognized Mary's abilities as a writing teacher at an awards ceremony where she received a special award for Excellence in the Teaching of Writing. This was the first time such an award was given as part of the national writing contest for high school students. Four of her students won top awards in the national fiction writing contest sponsored by Silver Lake College.

In 2018, Mary published the first two books in the Children of the Light adventure series for ages 10 to adult based on the Fruit of the Spirit. The complete series of six books was completed in 2021 and is now available (childrenofthelightbooks.com).

About her creative writing courses she says: In these creative writing programs for grades 5-8, I want students to believe they can express their unique ideas through fiction and non-fiction writing. Rainbow Class teaches students the needed skills to understand the value of both kinds of writing. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of students become motivated not only to write well in school but to write and create on their own time. Pot of Gold continues to foster creativity while introducing writing techniques vital for success in high school. Both courses can easily be taught in any two consecutive grades 5-8.  The two courses may also be taught in two consecutive semesters in a single grade 6-8.

I have found that students who have completed both courses are not intimidated by high school writing. In fact, many of my former students have said they look forward to writing because they have learned to be confident and skilled through Rainbow and Pot of Gold.

It is my great pleasure to introduce you to two exciting writing courses that can easily be adapted to your unique situation and teaching style. Each lesson is easy to follow and fun to teach. Your students will be inspired to be the best writers they can be.
